Faculty of Philosophy

The Philosophy Faculty has considerable strengths in legal, moral and political philosophy. The White’s Chair of Moral Philosophy is one of the most distinguished Ethics chairs in the world; and the faculty has strong connections with political and legal philosophers based in the Politics and IR department and the Law Faculty.

As a result, it has acted as one of the main sites for research on the ethics of war and peace. Jeff McMahan is the current holder of the White’s Chair; Cecile Fabre is a member of the Faculty, as are Tom Simpson and John Gardner, all of whom have published on the ethics of killing in general and the ethics of war in particular.
